Music

Music is central to worship. We have many opportunities for singers and instrumentalists to join in praising God.

At First United Presbyterian Church, we find great joy in making and enjoying music together. Music at First United Presbyterian is a blend of old and new, recognizing that we are all God’s people and music is as varied as the peoples of the world.

Although FUPC counts among its members many talented musicians, training is not required for participation in the music program. All that is needed is the desire to make a joyful noise glorifying God! Three adult ensembles are available for membership: the Chancel Choir, the Chancel Ringers, and the Worship Band. They practice weekly and share responsibilities for Sunday morning worship services and special services.

Music Ministries

Please contact Isaac Thomas, Director of Music Ministries, with any questions you have about music at First United Presbyterian.

Chancel Choir

The Chancel Choir at First United Presbyterian Church welcomes everyone. No audition is required. The Chancel Choir provides primary music leadership for the late morning worship service on Sundays from late August through June.

This group of volunteer singers makes a joyful noise to the Lord. We ask singers to commit to the regular schedule of this active ministry and to attend as often as they are able. The Chancel Choir rehearses a varied repertoire from many traditions. We choose music from the history of church music, from Baroque through Romantic and on to contemporary composers. This group also enjoys close fellowship in its ministry, joining for social functions throughout the year.

Rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings, 7:00 to 8:30 in the Music Room, with a warmup Sunday mornings in the Music Room at 10:30. The Choir takes a break in the summer.

Chancel Ringers

The Chancel Ringers, a group of adult bell ringers, rehearses weekly in the sanctuary during the school year and regularly offers music in worship. We have a long tradition of participation in worship at First United Presbyterian Church. People of all abilities are welcome to join us. We will give you the tools to have a successful music experience that offers music for the glory of God!

Worship Band

The Worship Band consists of several adult musicians who assist on Sunday mornings, primarily at the 11:00 service. We rehearse weekly on Wednesday evenings in preparation for upcoming services.

The band includes, but is not limited to guitar, bass, and piano. All that is required to join is the ability to play an instrument and a desire to assist in the musical portions of worship at First United Presbyterian Church glorify God in music.

Contact the Director of Music Ministries for more information.

Youth and Children’s Music

Musical participation by children in worship is an important tradition at FUPC. These groups rehearse during the school year and participate in worship several times each year.

  • Our youth are active in the life of the church and assist in a variety of ways from assisting with the sound and video for our worship services to singing in the youth choir for Youth Sunday, or playing an instrument in worship.
  • During Sunday School lessons on Sunday mornings, the younger children rehearse in preparation to sing and play percussion instruments during worship services.
  • All those learning instruments on their own are also encouraged to contact the Director of Music Ministries or Organist to set up a time where they might play during worship or special events.

Music Ministry Interns

First United Presbyterian has four Music Ministry Interns. These individuals are university students that have shown gifts in music, a desire to lead worship with those gifts, and a strong Christian faith. The internship provides opportunities to observe and participate in various activities of music in a worship service, music in a church, and music’s place in the life of a Christian. The interns actively participate in both Sunday services, assist the Director of Music Ministries, and creatively use music in the life of the church.
