Look Before You Leap (New Members Class)

We have had a different kind of year at the church and miss being able to see you each week!  Recently, we are hearing that some of you may still wish to formally join the church in 2020.  This adds such excitement to our congregational life!  We’ve come up with a new plan for inquiry to happen and for you to decide if this is when you’d like to become a member.

On Sunday, November 22, at 4 o’clock, we invite you to participate in a Zoom conversation, Look Before You Leap, that will help you meet others who are also considering this step.  At Look Before You Leap, we show a PowerPoint of the mission and ministries of FUPC, give a brief overview of Presbyterian beliefs, discuss ways we continue to be engaged in the Lord’s work (even during this pandemic!), and have time for questions.  Usually, we serve favorite refreshments from the Presbyterian cookbook, too, but (unfortunately) we will have to forego that this time.

Although most who attend Look Before You Leap join the church, it is not required that you do this right away or at all.  You are always welcome to worship with us and to be involved in any and every way.  But we want to continue to invite you into membership.  It affords two opportunities that benefit you and the congregation:  1) to hold office (as an elder or deacon) and 2) to vote in meetings of the congregation.  Beyond that, membership provides joy as you become involved in work and ministry around matters that change and shape our church and community.  And when you need the church in caring ways, we try to be present for you with Christ-like love.

If you decide that you want to join, we will gather again on Zoom on Tuesday, December 1, at 7 o’clock with a few members of the Session to hear your Statements of Faith.  These are short expressions of how you see God at work in your life, what makes you want to be a member, and how you hope to serve the Lord through FUPC (especially, when the way is clearer).  The evening is brief and informal, and it is always spiritually encouraging to hear the faith stories of others.

New members will be received during the livestream worship on Sunday, December 6.  We expect to do this through photos and not in person.  We are very much looking forward to it.
