Beth’s Cross

We’re having a look at all the crosses at FUPC for the Lent 2024 theme: “Lift High the Cross.” This is Beth’s cross.

Beth Benham is the FUPC Office Manager. This cross was made of matchsticks by her aunt. Each match was burnt, then cut to a precise size and glued into place to form the design. Beth explains that this was a popular church craft for kids at the time. She has happy memories of creating ornaments in Vacation Bible School and speak lovingly of the craft projects her family made and kept over the years.

Beth’s father was particularly well known for making crosses by hand from wood. At one time he made 1,000 for a missionary in the family to distribute in Central Europe. He always carried one with him and used it to spark conversations with people in waiting rooms and other public spaces.

Now Beth’s cross enlivens her office space. Next time you drop by the church office, have a look for yourself! It’s an interesting item, worth closer examination.
