Fasting, Substituting, Replacing, or Reorienting for Lent

Lent is an invitation to relationship. It is a time to focus on Jesus and Christian discipleship. It is a time to shift our focus, draw closer to God and follow Jesus. This often involves or is aided by giving something up – fasting. Fasting can help us gain the time, resources or health that we need in order to better love and serve God and our neighbors so not only do we give something up we add something new – a substitute or a replacement. That all sounds really good but how about some specifics?

This graphic showed up in my social media, and it reminded me of the diet practice of making healthy substitutions – a way to make eating healthy simple. For example, if you’re craving something crunchy and salty instead of snacking on potato chips have some celery with a bit of healthy peanut butter.

These substitutions suggested for Lent by Pope Francis help us on our Lenten journey. During Lent, the church posts on Facebook and Instagram will be related to the themes mentioned in these substitutions. If you’re looking for a positive way to use social media, please join the church Facebook group or follow the church on Instagram. When you see a post from the church liking, commenting and sharing the post will increase the likelihood that you see future posts from the church.
