This October, First United Presbyterian Church will offer a new contemplative worship experience designed to provide respite for the worried and weary. Our Minister of Music, Isaac Thomas, retired pastor Joyce Daniels, and church members Pam Gilbreath and Don Steinkraus are collaborating to create a service where worshippers can step away from the busyness and worries of life and rest in God’s presence.
Four services will be held, one each Sunday evening in October at 6:00 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. Each will last about 45 minutes, be informal in style, and include easy to sing songs, scripture, and prayer—no sermon. This is a “come as you are” service, so casual and comfortable dress is encouraged. Every service will follow a theme and be led by a different worship leader:
- October 5 – “I Made You” led by Lorraine Brewer
- October 12 – “I Will Carry You” led by Jane Steinkraus
- October 19 – “I Will Sustain You” led by Drew Rutledge
- October 26 – “I Will Receive You” led by Rev. Stewart Smith (with communion)
Jesus said, “Come to me, all who are weary, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28) If you are discouraged, tired, or weary, that is exactly how Jesus invites you to come to Him—and it is how we invite you to come to worship with us.
This is a quite contemplative service. Childcare will be available for children 9 and younger. If you have questions, please contact the church office.
