New Beginnings is a bridge housing community in Fayetteville for the chronically homeless. It was designed to offer a different solution for those who were experiencing long term homelessness. There are 20 cottages for sleeping and a community building with a kitchen and bathrooms. The residents have two meals a day and they take turns assisting with the preparation. When the community was first built, First United Presbyterian Church made a donation to cover the cost of concrete sidewalks to connect the cabins to one another and the community building.
Recently, an addition was made to the existing community to address another need in our city. When a unhoused person is discharged from the hospital, they often need assistance with medications and follow-up care as well as a place they can rest for more than just the night. A Place to Heal was built at New Beginnings to address that need. Four cabins and a bathhouse were added to be a place for recovery or hospice care. The buildings were donated but funds were needed to cover the cost the foundations and the cost of preparing the site. In the picture above, our Outreach and Service Ministry Moderator, Sara Koenig is presenting Janet Gardner, Director of Healthcare at New Beginnings and Solomon Burchfield, Director of New Beginnings, with a check to cover the cost.
