Stewardship of God’s gifts that is enthusiastic, wise and faithful...
For Presbyterians, stewardship is an organizing idea that grows out of our baptism, drawn both from Jesus’ teaching and from the rest of the Old and New Testaments.
Romans 12:1-2 urges us: “Because of God’s great mercy in Christ….offer yourselves as a living sacrifice to God, dedicate to God’s service and pleasing to God. This is the true worship that you should offer.” John Calvin, an important leader of the early Reformed movement, echoed these ideas: “We are not our own. We are God’s own. We belong to God.”
Since we believe that we belong completely to God, we regard our time, talents, and financial resources as God’s gifts, entrusted to us to use or manage according to God’s purposes. Each hour, each ability or interest, each relationship, each dollar or investment is an opportunity not primarily to pursue our own purposes, but to further God’s purposes.
We are grateful for the many faithful members of First United Presbyterian Church who give sacrificially of their resources in order that God’s work in and through the church can flourish. Each fall, we rededicate our lives to Christ on Stewardship Dedication Sunday, committing ourselves to serve God with our time, talents, and financial resources.
